The straight answer on Diageo severance in 2026
There is no verified public Diageo severance table that lets every employee enter a salary and years of service and know the answer. Anyone claiming one global formula is going beyond the company's public disclosures.
Diageo operates across many countries. Employees can sit under different contracts, policies, collective agreements and local laws. Two people with similar titles may receive different terms because they work in different places or employment groups.
The worker threat is signing too quickly because a large company number sounds reassuring. Diageo's $514 million severance cost does not tell you whether your own offer correctly includes pay, benefits, bonus, equity, pension, notice or unused leave.
What the $514 million figure means—and what it does not
Diageo's fiscal 2026 financial statements report a $908 million exceptional charge for restructuring programmes. The company says that charge mainly included $514 million in severance costs, largely connected with Europe, Corporate and other regions.
The same filing says fiscal 2026 cash expenditure on restructuring was $156 million. Accounting charges and cash paid during one year can differ because companies recognize expected costs and settle payments on different schedules.
Dividing $514 million by the reported headcount decline will not produce a reliable average package. The figures cover different timing, populations and accounting categories. They do not disclose what any named employee received.
Our separate Diageo job cuts investigation owns the 1,922-worker decline, duplication language and operating-model threat. This page owns the narrower question workers are searching: what should I verify in a Diageo severance or redundancy offer?
Ask HR for the complete set of documents
A headline, verbal promise or slide from a group meeting is not enough. Ask which written document governs your case.
- The separation, redundancy or termination letter naming your last day and reason for exit.
- The severance plan, redundancy policy, employment contract and any collective agreement that applies.
- A written calculation showing salary, service date, notice, severance and every cap or exclusion.
- The release or settlement agreement, including the signing deadline and revocation period if one applies.
- Benefit, pension, share-plan, bonus and commission documents showing what ends, continues or vests.
- A final-pay statement covering unused holiday or vacation, expenses and any money already earned.
If two documents conflict, ask HR to explain the difference in writing. Save the versions you were lawfully given, while leaving confidential business, customer and employee information where it belongs.
Read the money section line by line
Start with base pay. Check the salary rate, service date, credited service and whether the offer uses completed years, partial years or another method. A wrong service date can change the entire calculation.
Separate notice pay from severance or redundancy pay. They may be different legal or contractual amounts. Ask whether you will work through notice, remain employed on garden leave or receive pay instead of notice.
Then check variable compensation. Does the document address an annual bonus, sales commission, incentive plan or performance award already earned? Does termination before a payment date cancel it? Past practice is not enough; get the answer in writing.
Finally, confirm payment timing and tax withholding. A lump sum, salary continuation and delayed payment create different cash-flow problems. Ask when each amount will arrive and what could stop it. The broader 2026 severance question guide can help you organize the review.
Benefits, pension and shares can be worth more than one extra week
Find the exact date health, dental, life, disability and employee-assistance coverage ends. Ask whether Diageo pays for any continuation period and what you must do to keep coverage afterward.
Check pension and retirement accounts separately. Confirm whether service continues through notice, whether contributions stop on the termination date and whether any early-retirement or transfer choice has a deadline.
For shares and long-term incentives, read the plan rules rather than relying only on the separation letter. Ask what happens to vested awards, unvested awards, options and performance conditions. The answer may depend on the plan, the reason for exit and the official employment end date.
A larger cash number can distract from benefits that disappear quickly. Put every item on one timeline so you can see the real value of the package.
The release is what Diageo receives from you
Severance is often offered in exchange for promises from the employee. The agreement may release legal claims, require confidentiality, limit statements about the company, set cooperation duties or repeat restrictions on competition and solicitation.
Read the definition of released claims, not just the payment page. Check whether the language covers unknown claims, group companies, executives or events that happen after signing. Ask what rights are not being waived.
Look for repayment or clawback terms. Some agreements require money back if the worker breaches a promise, returns to the company or receives another payment. A template label does not make a clause harmless.
If you do not understand the release, get qualified advice in your jurisdiction before signing. The questions to ask before signing a severance package provide a practical starting list, not a substitute for legal advice.
Your country changes the severance question
Diageo's public filing is global. Employment rights are not. Keep these categories separate when you review an offer.
| If you work in | What to separate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Company severance, contractual pay, final wages, benefits and any WARN notice rights | The plan document, release deadline, health-coverage options and whether a covered mass layoff triggers notice rules |
| United Kingdom | Statutory redundancy pay, contractual or enhanced pay, notice, holiday and settlement terms | Service and pay inputs, consultation steps, notice treatment and the independent-advice requirement for a settlement agreement |
| Ontario, Canada | Termination pay and severance pay, which are different concepts under employment standards rules | Eligibility, service, payroll facts, contract language, benefits continuation and whether further rights may apply |
This is not a complete legal comparison. Diageo employs people elsewhere, and rules can change. Use the government sources below and advice specific to where you work.
Questions to send before you accept the offer
- Which Diageo plan, policy, contract or collective agreement controls my package?
- What service date and salary did you use, and can you show the calculation?
- Which amounts are notice, severance, redundancy, earned wages, bonus, commission or unused leave?
- When does employment legally end, and when does each benefit stop?
- What happens to pension contributions, vested shares, unvested awards and options?
- What claims and future activities does the release restrict?
- Is there a revocation period, independent-advice requirement or company contribution toward advice?
- What happens if I find another job, return to Diageo or decline the offer?
Ask calmly and keep the answers together. You are not being difficult by requesting the calculation behind a document that changes your income, benefits and rights.

Use the free Job Threat Check before a notice arrives when the question is personal: are changes around my company, team, manager and role forming a pattern? The two-minute check was built to translate visible pressure into a plain-English result and next steps. It cannot see Diageo's private selection process or calculate legal entitlements.
Use the free Layoff Tracker and Corporate Stress Index when you want company-level context. It preserves weekly snapshots of layoffs, restructuring, AI pressure, outsourcing, hiring freezes and cost cutting across 50 major technology and banking employers. Diageo is not currently one of the 50 scored companies, so the index should not be presented as a Diageo risk rating.

Diageo's $514 million severance cost proves the restructuring carried a large employee-exit expense. It does not tell an individual worker what to expect.
The package in front of you matters more than the companywide total. Service dates, notice, benefits, incentives, pension, shares and release language can change the real value.
Fear is a bad review process, and the first page is rarely the whole deal. Get the controlling documents, build one timeline and understand what Diageo is paying for—and what it is asking you to give up.
