Disney Tech Layoffs: $60 Million for AI Talent. Is Your Job Still Wanted?

Disney is investing in a new AI team as existing employees lose jobs. The hiring budget can survive while your place in it disappears.

Quick answer

Disney cut a few hundred positions across HR and technology on September 29, Reuters reported. October filings reveal an estimated $60 million annual compensation run rate for Character.AI recruits and 66 accepted Disney offers. Karandeep Anand, Character.AI’s former CEO, now leads Disney’s companywide technology function. For existing employees, the warning is a shift in the expertise management is choosing to fund. Whether your role remains funded depends on the staffing decisions around your team.

Your team can lose funding while Disney recruits.

Watching your employer recruit while colleagues leave is a brutal lesson in how job security works. Investment can grow in one part of a company while another team loses its future.

Reuters reported on September 29 that Disney was cutting a few hundred positions across HR and technology. TheWrap identified two earlier rounds in April and July, making this the third round under CEO Josh D’Amaro.

In an August 24 memo published by TheWrap, Chief People Officer Sonia Coleman said involuntary reductions already underway in some areas would continue into 2027.

An employee keeping systems running can still face a decision about whether that team belongs in the next organization. A manager’s praise leaves the team’s next budget unanswered.

Disney put serious money behind the incoming team.

The filed September 18 term sheet describes salary, bonuses and Disney stock compensation. Its preliminary estimate used approximately 65 offered employees. A separate filed declaration records 66 who accepted offers.

Section 5 sets an estimated $180 million total for compensation and retention over three years. A $30 million retention pool supplements pay in the first two years until the annual run rate is reached. Portions depend on continued employment through the first and second anniversaries of the initial transaction’s closing.

That is a deliberate effort to attract people and keep them. Existing employees deserve specific answers about access to expanding work when their own functions are being reduced.

Character.AI also announced a separate proposed $20 million technology-license transaction, subject to higher or better offers in its bankruptcy sale.

The AI hire came before September’s cuts.

On September 18, Disney named Karandeep Anand its first companywide CTO, effective October 2. The company said Character.AI technical employees were expected to join him. The September 29 reductions followed that announcement.

Character.AI announced its Chapter 11 process on October 12. The compensation terms appeared in the October 13 filing, before Business Insider’s October 16 report brought the figures into wider view.

The new information is the scale and structure of the recruiting commitment. This sequence shows hiring and reductions developing alongside each other.

The new boss has authority across your technology stack.

Disney hired Character.AI’s former CEO to lead this work. Anand reports directly to D’Amaro and oversees enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product and engineering, working across Disney’s segment technology teams.

D’Amaro said technology creates the most value when it “helps people do their best work.” Employees can reasonably ask how that ambition will translate into staffing, training and opportunities for the people already there.

Our assessment: this broad remit makes platform ownership and project funding important signals to follow. A team can lose influence if decisions about its tools, roadmap or staffing move elsewhere. The practical question is who will approve its next budget.

Infrastructure, data, product and engineering employees should pay attention because Disney explicitly placed those functions within the role. Ask how the new leadership will decide which platforms, projects and teams receive investment.

If a departing colleague’s duties land with you, record the hours and responsibilities involved. Ask management to choose which deadlines or tasks change. Our guide to unfilled vacancies explains how a temporary staffing gap can become the normal workload.

Ask for a real route into the work being funded.

An internal opportunity needs an approved position, a hiring manager and a decision date. Ask whether your experience fits the new work and which gaps the team would help you close.

For a proposed transfer, confirm the grade, pay, responsibilities and training before agreeing. A general promise to develop AI skills leaves those employment questions open.

Outside Disney, describe a system you made reliable, a launch you delivered or a costly problem you solved. Specific outcomes help another employer understand your experience beyond the brand on your badge.

Keep those conversations active while you have income and choices. Ask what work your team will own in the next plan, and which positions have approval to deliver it.
