Your work can be good and your project can still disappear
A cancelled game can take years of work out of an employee’s hands in one announcement. The studio’s reputation, a demanding production schedule and your commitment to the team cannot force the owner to keep funding it.
That leaves people handling several losses at once: income, colleagues and work they may have hoped to put in front of players. Some of that work may also be confidential, making the next job application harder.
Get a clear answer about your position and any route into another team. Praise for the studio’s legacy carries little weight when you need to know how long your pay and benefits will continue.
What EA has confirmed about BioWare and Mass Effect
EA’s message to employees confirms the closure and the decision to stop the early-development Mass Effect project. It says the company will concentrate on fewer large action-adventure projects while continuing Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
Different projects inside EA are getting different decisions. Ask which approved project would fund your next role and who controls that budget.
BioWare already rebuilt around Mass Effect once
BioWare’s Edmonton studio was established in 1995 and became known for Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Its January 2025 update said a core team was developing the next Mass Effect game while colleagues were matched with other EA teams.
That history makes today’s internal-move questions urgent. A role can survive one restructuring and disappear when the next project decision arrives. Ask what work the new team has committed funding to deliver.
The reported 400 cuts extend beyond the Edmonton studio
Reuters, citing Bloomberg, reports approximately 400 positions across EA, around 3% of staff, including about 50 at BioWare.
An employee elsewhere at EA should therefore check the decision for their own team. The BioWare name dominates the headline, while the wider restructuring may affect people working on other assignments.
Ask your manager where your position appears in the approved staffing plan, who makes the selection decision and when HR will confirm your terms.
An internal opportunity needs a funded job behind it
EA says it will help affected employees explore other opportunities inside the company. That gives employees a concrete commitment to follow up. An application still needs a hiring decision.
- Which suitable positions are approved and open to affected employees, and who can introduce me to the hiring manager?
- Will the company allow time for interviews during the transition, and what happens if a decision arrives after my proposed last day?
- Would a transfer change my location, pay, seniority, probation arrangements or employment terms?
- If I decline a move or receive no offer, how does that affect the separation terms being proposed?
Keep the answers with your own paperwork. A vacancy in another city can create moving costs and household disruption, so the offer needs enough detail to evaluate.
Protect the work you can show your next employer
For artists, writers, designers, engineers and producers, a cancelled project raises a specific problem: how do you demonstrate work that the public never saw?
Before access ends, request written permission for any portfolio material, credit information, references or project descriptions you want to use. Agree on what can be shown privately to a recruiter and what must stay confidential.
Create a permitted record of your contribution using the tools and information you are authorized to retain. Describe your responsibilities, the problems you solved and the skills you can take into another team. Leave unreleased assets, code and internal documents in approved systems.
Ask a manager or colleague who knows your work whether they can act as a reference. Specific evidence of what you delivered is useful when the finished game never reaches a hiring manager’s screen.
A smaller skate. team needs a smaller workload
EA also says the team supporting skate. will become smaller while working towards a focused roadmap. Employees remaining on a live game need to understand how staffing matches the promises made to players.
Ask which updates are being delayed, what support coverage changes and who handles incidents. A shorter organization chart can leave the release calendar untouched unless someone makes a separate decision about scope.
For a live game, pin down responsibility for player support, release testing and incidents. If you are taking over another person’s coverage, agree on a sustainable schedule and which planned work comes off your list.

New ownership puts the company’s priorities under another spotlight
Reuters reports that EA’s US$55 billion take-private deal closed in August, led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. The October restructuring follows the ownership change. EA has not publicly tied these job cuts to a specific financing obligation.
Check which projects the new organization is funding, the staffing approved for them and who owns the delivery plan.

Get your departure terms before the handover takes over
A closure can fill your final working days with documentation, asset reviews and requests to help another team. Make time to understand your own outcome before the transition consumes it.
Request the employment end date, payment breakdown, benefits timeline, accrued vacation treatment and any deadline for responding to an agreement. Ask who will answer questions once your normal accounts close.
For Edmonton employees, the notice rules below provide a starting point for reviewing an offer. Check your service dates and ask how the company calculated each payment.
Make room in the handover for interviews, references and questions about your terms. Documenting the project should leave you time to prepare for the next job.
Edmonton employees should check the notice rules
Alberta’s group-termination rules generally require employers planning 50 or more terminations at one location within four weeks to give the minister at least four weeks’ written notice. If advance notice cannot be given, notice must be provided as soon as reasonable. Seasonal and task-specific employment are excluded from the group rules.
The reported figure of about 50 BioWare positions is approximate. The actual headcount, timing and employment arrangements would determine whether the conditions apply. The reporting establishes no breach.
For eligible employees, individual statutory notice or termination pay depends on service:
| Length of service | Minimum employer notice |
|---|---|
| More than 90 days, less than 2 years | 1 week |
| 2 years, less than 4 years | 2 weeks |
| 4 years, less than 6 years | 4 weeks |
| 6 years, less than 8 years | 5 weeks |
| 8 years, less than 10 years | 6 weeks |
| 10 years or more | 8 weeks |
Exceptions apply, including just cause and some short fixed-term or task-specific contracts. Minister notice and individual entitlements are separate requirements. The group rule alone creates no automatic extra four weeks’ pay. Check your contract and circumstances before accepting a payment calculation.
