EBAY · OCTOBER UPDATE · EMPLOYEE JOB RISK

eBay Layoffs 2026: 1,000 Jobs Targeted. Managers Hit Too.

Another round after February. Directors, managers and technical roles appear in the San Jose notice. The restructuring is expected to be substantially complete by early 2027.

Quick answer

eBay plans to eliminate around 1,000 jobs, approximately 9% of its global workforce, in its second major round of cuts this year. Reuters reported the staff memo on October 21; an October 22 SEC filing confirms the percentage. A San Jose notice identifies affected leadership and technical positions. Employees face a fresh restructuring even as eBay expects quarterly results above its earlier forecast.

“Our strategy is working,” CEO Jamie Iannone told employees in the memo reviewed by Reuters. For the people facing dismissal, that is a hard message to hear. The company sees an opportunity ahead and has decided to pursue it with fewer employees.

Surviving February did not protect October.

The latest announcement follows roughly 800 job cuts in February. Both rounds were explained through changes to the organization and its priorities. Eight months later, employees are facing another round of decisions about who stays. Together, February’s cuts and October’s planned reduction cover roughly 1,800 positions.

Keep your external options active between rounds. Starting from zero after a fresh announcement leaves you with less room to choose.

Directors and engineers are on the same cut list.

California’s official EDD report records 229 permanent cuts at 2025 Hamilton Avenue, San Jose, effective October 21. The notice copy published by Value Added Resource includes this job-title attachment:

AreaExamples in the notice
LeadershipDirector roles in product, software development, data science and other functions; positions with manager titles.
Engineering and securitySoftware engineers, information security engineers, architects and systems administrators.
Product and designTechnical product managers, designers and user experience researchers.
Corporate functionsFinance, tax, people operations, recruiting and legal roles.

Our count finds 74 positions with director or manager titles, about 32% of the San Jose list. Seniority and specialist expertise offered limited protection in this local reduction.

Better results still came with a cut to payroll.

eBay’s SEC filing says Q3 results are expected to exceed the guidance issued in August. It also estimates $130 million to $150 million in pre-tax restructuring charges, substantially all for severance and post-employment benefits.

Management expects to use the savings for its strategic and operating initiatives. An eBay spokesperson told Value Added Resource that the cuts would help it “continue to operate from a position of strength.”

Employees can help build a business and still be excluded from its next phase.

The timetable reaches into early 2027.

The company expects the employee restructuring to be substantially complete by the end of Q1 2027, subject to local law, consultation requirements and business needs. Individual notification and employment-end dates can differ.

The October 28 earnings call is the next public checkpoint. Look for further detail about the scope of the changes and whether management expands the plan.

Keep your hours out of the savings plan.

If your team changes, record the new duties, deadlines and hours they require. Put a pay and title review in writing when the scope of your job grows.

Set a limit on added work before it becomes routine. Keep agreed priorities and deadlines in writing so the demands of an expanded role stay visible.

Make your next move on your terms.

  1. Turn your results into interview evidence. Record the projects you delivered, problems you solved and outcomes you can discuss without sharing confidential material.
  2. Start conversations outside eBay. Contact people you trust, refresh your resume and take interviews while you can compare opportunities on your own terms.
  3. Calculate your financial runway. List essential monthly costs and available savings. Use that number to plan how much time you have to find the right move.
  4. If you receive a separation offer, review the payment, benefits, equity and response deadlines together. Get qualified advice where the terms are unclear.
