Even AI teams are receiving the offer.
The Verge reports participation across AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows and Devices, Xbox, finance and HR. Commercial sales, marketing and security are among the exclusions. Some other organizations participate only partly. TechCrunch also reports exclusions for some data-center employees.
Microsoft can invest in Copilot while reshaping the teams building it. Employees working on a priority product still need to examine what changes around their role.
The spring buyouts did not end the cuts.
On July 6, Microsoft announced approximately 4,800 role eliminations. In the same message, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said more than 30% of eligible employees had accepted the earlier retirement program. She warned that “there will be more changes ahead.”
Our July Microsoft reporting followed that restructuring. Today’s offer expands eligibility beyond the earlier age-and-service formula. Microsoft says age, tenure and performance do not determine eligibility for this program, GeekWire reports.
The 2027 staffing warning is already on record.
On the April 29 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood said “we expect headcount will decrease year-over-year” as she discussed the next fiscal year. Fiscal 2027 runs from July 2026 through June 2027.
For the quarter ended June 30, Microsoft reported revenue of $90 billion, up 18%, headcount down 2% and $41 billion in capital expenditure. Our earnings investigation covers the financial detail.
Declining the package leaves the staffing question open.
Microsoft told GeekWire that voluntary offers leave layoffs available when business conditions warrant them. The company expects a lower participation share than its earlier retirement program, without publishing a departure forecast.
Declining keeps you employed under the existing arrangements. It leaves management’s later staffing decisions unresolved.
Watch October 28 before you decide.
Microsoft’s next earnings call is Wednesday, October 28, at 2:30 p.m. Pacific. Listen for an updated headcount outlook, expected program costs and how management describes staffing after voluntary departures. The call comes weeks before the offer closes.
Price the package before you sign.
GeekWire reports terms resembling standard severance: pay linked to tenure and level, continued stock vesting, fixed-period healthcare and career support. The extended healthcare from the earlier retirement offer is absent.
Leaving fixes your departure date and written package. Staying keeps salary coming while you remain employed and may add stock vesting, but future staffing and later severance terms can change. Compare household costs, benefits and job-search time; review any release with a qualified local adviser.
Your colleagues can leave. Their work can stay.
If projects continue, departing employees may leave customer commitments and technical problems with the remaining team. Ask for one updated plan naming the owner, time budget and deadline for each inherited task. Testing, security reviews and incident coverage belong in that plan before anyone promises extra output.
Build an option outside Microsoft.
