VIRGIN MEDIA O2 · WORKFORCE REDUCTIONS CONFIRMED

Virgin Media O2 Redundancies 2026: Support Jobs Face the Axe

Management is already getting smaller. Support roles, contractor budgets and fibre projects face a changing plan. Employees need to know where their own work fits.

Quick answer

Virgin Media O2 confirmed workforce reductions on November 3, with most of the reduction expected in non-customer-facing roles. Its roughly 30% target measures total people costs over two years. Workforce reductions account for about £300 million of a wider £800 million annual savings target by 2029. Around £400 million of the overall programme is due in 2027. Leadership cuts have begun, and wider proposals will go through consultation.

The job cuts are now confirmed.

CEO Lutz Schüler says the changes will reach employees staying with the business: “for those staying we will work differently.” That puts the shape of the remaining jobs inside the restructuring too.

Sky News reports an insider estimate of up to 4,000 affected jobs. The company has not announced a final headcount. Employees should establish which positions enter consultation and which duties the proposed structure will retain.

Broadband pressure is changing what management will fund.

Reuters describes competition from BT and smaller broadband providers as part of the pressure on the business. The company says it wants to concentrate spending on fewer opportunities that improve customer service and generate returns.

That gives employees a second question alongside whether their team performs well: does management still intend to fund the activity? A useful project can lose its place when the investment plan changes. Find out who controls its budget and whether approval covers the next phase.

2027 is already inside the savings deadline.

Virgin Media O2 expects around £400 million of the overall savings programme in 2027. That is half its £800 million target by 2029. This milestone spans staffing and other costs.

The timetable puts the next budget close to the employment decisions. Follow which support posts, contractor renewals and projects receive funding for 2027. An assignment can keep you busy today while management decides whether it continues into next year.

Fewer management layers can remove your next step.

Managers can lose a position when two reporting structures become one. Employees below them can also lose an experienced decision-maker, access to a promotion or someone who understands their work. A larger team under one manager may leave less time for coaching and resolving problems.

During a reporting-line change, establish who will assess your performance, approve leave and make promotion decisions. If a management post disappears, ask where its decisions go. Otherwise an employee can be left chasing approval from people who have never seen the work.

Follow the part of the plan that touches your role.

The company has named the broad changes below. The questions describe possible consequences to examine as local proposals arrive; they are our analysis.

Disclosed changeWho should pay attentionQuestion to establish
Non-customer-facing reductionsSupport employees whose functions overlapWhich roles and skills are included in the proposed selection pool?
Lower contractor useContractors and employees relying on specialist supportDoes the contract renew, and who will maintain the system or complete the assignment?
Fibre upgrades halted beyond existing commitmentsPeople assigned to the affected upgrade programmeIs this work covered by an existing commitment, and what funded assignment follows it?
Greater AI use in service and network workEmployees doing the activities being automatedWho will handle errors, exceptions and service recovery, and how much time is allowed?

A fibre change can end an assignment before the service ends.

Virgin Media O2 is halting further fibre upgrades beyond existing partner commitments. It is continuing mobile investment and plans a lower-cost cable-network upgrade. The immediate employment question for a project team is which programme still has an approved budget.

Get the next milestone and staffing allocation confirmed before assuming a transfer will follow. A network planning skill may be useful elsewhere, but an internal move still needs a funded vacancy, a hiring manager and an agreed start. Ask what happens between the current assignment ending and the proposed role beginning.

Service staff can follow Sierra’s role in handling calls.

Virgin Media O2’s September 24 Sierra launch introduced an AI voice agent for selected routine broadband fault calls. The company said human advisers would stay available and handle more complex or sensitive issues. Its November plan expands AI use across service, network planning, fault management and offers.

For service staff, watch whether automation leaves you with a higher share of complaints and complex cases while the handling-time target stays unchanged. In network work, check who verifies automated fault diagnoses and signs off a fix. The time needed to correct a tool belongs in the staffing plan. Employees should be able to raise these gaps before a smaller team is expected to absorb them.

Use consultation to get the selection process into writing.

Acas says consultation should cover the proposed changes, ways to reduce redundancies, future skills and selection criteria. Its selection guidance explains how pools and scoring should work. Ask your representative which proposal applies to you and how your evidence will be considered.

In Great Britain, where 100 or more redundancies are proposed at one establishment within 90 days, collective consultation must begin at least 45 days before the first dismissals take effect. The employer must also notify the government through form HR1. Ask your representative which establishment and timetable apply to your proposal.

Request the proposed structure, the roles being compared and the timetable for submitting questions. Check that your actual duties and relevant skills appear in the assessment. Keep your own employment documents and a dated record of answers, with confidential company and customer material left in company systems.

The next strategic update is expected around full-year results. Local consultation can matter sooner. The document that names your role, selection pool or alternative vacancy should drive your preparation.
