Volvo Cars Job Cuts: 2,500 More Roles Targeted by Mid-2027

Office staff and consultants face another reduction. Most cuts are around Gothenburg as shrinking net cash adds urgency to the turnaround.

Quick answer

Volvo Cars announced approximately 2,500 additional job reductions on 23 October 2026, including around 2,000 in Sweden. The plan covers office and professional roles, including consultant positions. CFO Fredrik Hansson told TT that most reductions would be around Gothenburg. Methods include ending consultant contracts, natural attrition and targeted employee exit packages. CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Reuters the cuts should be completed by mid-2027.

Sweden takes the biggest hit.

Engineering, corporate and consultant teams face another reorganisation after the earlier cost programme. Losing specialist knowledge can leave projects with difficult handovers and fewer people who understand the systems. Employees carrying that work need delivery plans that account for the expertise leaving.

Kristina Tullgren, chair of Volvo Cars’ academic employees’ association, told Ingenjören that the union had pressed for consultant and purchased-service reductions first. Volvo had made those reductions, but management judged them insufficient. She welcomed the proposed voluntary departures and hoped they would be enough.

R&D is being asked to cost less.

Volvo says in its Q3 report that its SPA3 vehicle platform and HuginCore computing foundation are established. Its next cost decisions reach across the organisation:

AreaCompany decisionWhat to watch inside your team
R&D and engineeringContinue lowering R&D costs.Which development tasks stop, and how testing and launch support fit the remaining resources.
Corporate functionsReduce overheads and empower regions.Reporting lines, duplicated responsibilities and who has authority to make decisions.

The cash squeeze explains the urgency.

Volvo’s Q3 report shows net cash falling from SEK 26.9 billion at 31 December 2025 to SEK 1.0 billion at 30 September 2026. Cash and cash equivalents remained SEK 32.3 billion. Quarterly free cash flow was negative SEK 8.9 billion.

The reported operating loss of SEK 5.6 billion included a SEK 1.1 billion US CAFE-credit revaluation and SEK 0.9 billion in Polestar losses. Excluding joint ventures, associates and comparability items, the loss was SEK 3.7 billion. Reuters reported that Citi put the consensus loss forecast at SEK 724 million. Shares fell 24% to a record low on 23 October.

Group revenue fell 23% to SEK 66.9 billion. Volvo cites price competition in China and US tariff and incentive changes; China revenue fell almost 50%. Management is seeking another SEK 5 billion in cost reductions.

A busy product pipeline can still come with a smaller team.

Volvo plans 13 new cars through 2030 while lowering R&D costs. Its EX60 production ramp-up has taken longer than planned because of new industrial technology. Launch teams face product commitments alongside a demand to spend less.

Validation, fault investigation and supplier coordination still take time. When a specialist leaves, ask which milestones change and who takes responsibility for unresolved problems. Put those decisions into the delivery plan before the handover ends.

Factory staffing follows a separate plan.

Volvo separately says it is adapting its blue-collar workforce to production volumes using existing flexibility. The 2,500-role reduction concerns white-collar roles. The company is exploring multi-brand assembly with Geely at Chengdu and Ghent as it concentrates production on five dedicated Volvo plants.

The first programme did not end the restructuring.

The 26 May 2025 programme targeted around 3,000 positions, including consultants, primarily office-based roles in Sweden. Together, the two announcements target approximately 5,500 positions across programmes announced about 17 months apart. October brings a fresh reduction after employees have already lived through the earlier changes.

The employment timetable runs ahead of the full savings.

The CEO’s mid-2027 completion expectation gives employees a planning horizon. Samuelsson also left further measures open, Reuters reported. Volvo expects the full financial effect by the end of 2027. Individual departures depend on the terms and dates communicated to each consultant or employee.

Akademikerförbundet SSR says negotiations are ahead and directs members towards their local representatives. It also identifies transition support through TRR under the collective agreement. Employees in Sweden can use those contacts to review exit proposals and the support available to them.
