Your salary stops growing. The bills keep coming.
The increment you expected may already have had a job: covering rent, school fees or savings. If living costs rise while your salary stays unchanged, that money has to stretch further. Build your household plans around confirmed income and ask when the next appraisal decision will be made.
The server bill got bigger.
Business Standard reports that Vembu cited both a fourfold rise in server prices and growing AI usage expenses. He also pointed to software-market uncertainty and geopolitical conditions.
Zoho’s own account of its infrastructure explains why hardware costs reach the company directly: it runs its own data centres and invests in servers, networks and storage. Buying equipment and paying to operate AI services are different costs, but both compete for company resources.
Employees can feel that competition through the compensation budget while their day-to-day work continues. Our AI spending investigation examines how infrastructure investment can narrow the room for staffing and pay.
The warning started with hiring. Now it reaches salary reviews.
In August 2 reporting, Vembu had already said spending that would have supported new employees was going towards AI and data-centre costs. He described limited job creation across the IT industry, including Zoho.
October’s announcement brings the consequences closer to existing employees. Hiring restraint limits opportunities to join or expand a team. Withholding annual increments affects the people already doing the work.
That progression gives employees a reason to follow budget decisions before a redundancy notice arrives. Look at which spending gets approved, which requests are postponed and what management says would allow investment in people to resume.
Flat headcount can put the squeeze on a team.
Zoho has also reduced its marketing budget, Financial Express reported. The cost controls extend across several parts of the business.
A company can recruit replacements while its total employee count stays unchanged. The team-level question is whether your vacancies remain funded and whether the people available match the work promised to customers.
If departures in your team lead to repeated temporary cover or transferred responsibilities, ask whether the staffing plan has changed. A vacancy that loses its funding can leave the same deliverables spread across fewer people.
The no-backfill guide explains how to distinguish a hiring delay from a position that has quietly left the budget.
Vembu is warning about software jobs.
After describing the challenges and thanking employees, Vembu ended his X statement with “Please pray for us.” His comments are reproduced in Financial Express. The appeal shows the seriousness of his message alongside the effort to avoid mass layoffs.
Vembu expects the next three to five years to show how Zoho’s business reinvention has worked, Business Standard reported. Employees have decisions to make much sooner: whether to take on a wider role, postpone a financial commitment or pursue another opportunity.
Management’s response should give people something they can plan around. Ask for the decision-maker, the review date and the business conditions for restoring increments. If the answer keeps moving, account for that uncertainty in your own plans.
Ask what would bring the raises back.
Use your next manager discussion to clarify the decisions that affect your compensation and workload.
| Decision to clarify | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Next salary review | When will the company reassess annual increases, and what would need to improve? |
| Promotion and bonus treatment | Does this decision also affect promotion increases, variable pay or retention adjustments? |
| Your team’s vacancies | Which open positions are approved for replacement, and which are being removed? |
| Added responsibilities | If my duties expand, what changes to priorities, targets or compensation will be agreed? |
Keep a brief written record of the answer and next review date. If your manager cannot decide on pay, ask who can approve a change.
Same pay should not hide a bigger job.
If you are offered wider responsibilities during a freeze, separate the development opportunity from the terms attached to it. A new title can help your career, but you still need to know the scope, support and compensation review attached to the work.
Record the responsibilities you agree to take on and the tasks that will leave your workload. When managers point to AI time savings, ask which steps have actually disappeared. Checking output, correcting errors and handling exceptions still take time.
Our AI productivity trap analysis examines how time savings can become higher targets. Compare any extra duties with the capacity and support your team actually has.
Keep your options moving.
A missed appraisal increase is a reason to check what comparable roles offer. Look at the salary range, responsibilities and skills in current openings. If another employer asks to speak, use the conversation to learn what your experience is worth outside your present team.
Set a date to review your own decision about staying. Repeatedly postponing it can turn a temporary compromise into an arrangement you never chose.
Read the job-hugging investigation if fear of the outside market is making the choice for you. If an employer later proposes lowering your existing salary, use the separate pay-cut questions guide.
You can support the work you do without putting every personal decision on hold until the company feels ready.
