Your management title is inside the calculation.
CEO Stephen Squeri told the Q3 earnings call that he had asked senior leaders earlier this year to streamline teams and remove organizational layers. He said the exercise would speed decisions and create capacity to invest in the company’s priorities.
CFO Christophe Le Caillec told CNBC that AmEx wants to “reduce layers and increase spans of controls” so it can automate more work. His explanation puts management positions and reporting lines directly inside the restructuring. The goal is a leaner organization prepared for AI.
A wider team still gets the same working day.
Coaching, performance reviews, escalations and difficult decisions still take time. If AmEx combines teams, a manager could inherit more of each while employees wait longer for support. Agree on who can make decisions and how urgent cases get handled. A larger role needs realistic capacity and a pay discussion before the new demands become routine.
Service, travel and coding already have an AI track record.
In the July 24 earnings call, Squeri described faster coding as “really not a savings because what that does is allows us to do more.” By October, executives were pairing their AI plans with a smaller organization. July’s disclosures also show that service staffing was already expected to decline over time.
| Work area | What Squeri disclosed in July | What employees should watch |
|---|---|---|
| Customer service and travel | AI-equipped representatives supported growth without a corresponding increase in staffing. He expected representative numbers to fall over time through attrition. | Higher case targets and enough time to resolve the difficult cases that remain. |
| Software development | Coding cycle times fell 30% to 40%. Squeri described the gain as capacity to deliver more technology projects. | Delivery targets that include testing, security and production support. |
| Marketing | AI helped campaigns reach the market faster. | More campaigns assigned to the same team and who checks the output. |
The 2027 squeeze starts with how the work is redesigned.
Le Caillec’s CNBC interview, also reported by Fast Company described automation benefits in the “coming quarters and the coming years.” That horizon reaches into 2027. Watch whether next year’s delivery plans turn expected AI time savings into fewer roles or higher targets before the full workflow has been tested.
AmEx has announced no separate 2027 layoff round. The warning concerns the demands employees could inherit after this reorganization. Put testing, security, approvals and difficult customer cases into any estimate of how much time the tools save.
AmEx put part of its sale gain into restructuring.
AmEx raised the lower end of its adjusted full-year earnings outlook to $17.60 per share from the $17.30 starting point confirmed in July, keeping the upper end at $17.90. Consolidated expenses increased 9% in Q3, reflecting higher customer-related costs. Revenue growth and a better earnings outlook have left management willing to cut positions.
The company booked a $982 million pretax gain from selling its Global Business Travel stake and said part was used for restructuring. The $336 million pretax restructuring charge equals about 34% of that gain. The accounting charge has been recorded while employees wait for the role decisions.
Compliance still needs people who know the work.
On October 8, the OCC imposed a $350 million penalty on American Express National Bank for anti-money-laundering program failures. Its findings included inadequate resources and staff lacking sufficient expertise. Squeri told investors “we are accountable for addressing them thoroughly”.
Squeri also said remediation costs were not expected to affect 2027 guidance. That statement leaves the staffing question open: who gets the cleanup assignments and enough time to complete them? Anyone given additional control work should record the training, review time and decision authority it requires.
Make your next move before the new structure settles.
- Managers: prepare a concise example of a team you led through operational change, including the decisions you made and the delivery results. Your experience can travel beyond the layer AmEx is removing.
- Service and travel employees: bring interview examples of complex complaints, disrupted journeys or cases that needed careful judgment. Developers and marketers: show how you checked AI output and protected quality.
- Book an interview or speak with a hiring contact while you have a salary. Compare the actual role, pay and working conditions. A worthwhile offer gives you a choice before AmEx makes its own.

Compare the decisions across banking.
Bank of America reported fewer managers, while Barclays explicitly linked fewer developers to AI productivity. AmEx is now simplifying its management structure to prepare for further automation. Our banking and company job-cut coverage follows those decisions through earnings calls and filings, with the evidence linked in each investigation.
