Canva gets a fresh start. Employees get the upheaval
You can help build a successful technology company and still find that its next chapter has no place for your role. Canva’s leadership wants a new structure, revised roles and more work concentrated in central hubs.
Perkins calls it the “hardest moment in our thirteen-year history”. Employees now have to decide whether the revised job still fits their career, salary and the life they have built around it.
AI rivals are coming for the design budget
Business Insider reports that Canva lowered its 2026 revenue-growth forecast from 30% to 20% in August. Its coverage identifies competition from OpenAI and Google’s image tools.
Information Age describes pressure from free generative AI tools that can handle work once requiring dedicated software. Canva already builds AI features of its own. The commercial challenge is persuading customers to keep paying as their alternatives expand.
Fewer layers. Bigger jobs. Where is the pay conversation?
Combining departments puts overlapping ownership and coordination work under scrutiny. Canva also plans to absorb narrower specialities into broader roles. Management positions, specialist boundaries and reporting relationships are all inside the redesign.
The danger for someone staying is a wider job with the old delivery expectations still attached. A new organisation chart takes minutes to announce. Learning unfamiliar work, handling escalations and making decisions across a larger remit take time.
| Management’s change | Put this question on the table |
|---|---|
| Management layers removed | Who can approve priorities and resolve conflicting demands? |
| Specialist work combined | Which responsibilities will I own, and what training comes first? |
| Product teams merged | Which commitments are being dropped so the new role fits? |
If Canva wants a broader role, put the salary in the offer before asking employees to accept it. Our AI productivity coverage examines how promised efficiency can become higher personal targets.
Keeping the job could mean moving your life
ABC reports that Sydney will become the primary hub for more product teams. Employees in Canva’s Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth operations should check whether their own roles are moving.
Even with relocation support, families must weigh housing, a partner’s work and schooling. Get the destination, deadline, covered costs and employment terms in writing.
For Australian employees, Fair Work says redundancy pay may apply where refusing relocation is reasonable. Entitlement depends on the circumstances.
The warning signs started before this announcement
Capital Brief verified 32 finance redundancies in January 2026. It also reports that 10 of Canva’s 12 technical writers were made redundant in March 2025.
A specialist title has already proved expendable here. The latest announcement extends the upheaval across the company’s structure, skills and locations.
Six months of salary. Check what the headline includes
Canva’s minimum payment is inclusive of statutory entitlements. Ask for the breakdown, payment dates and any agreement attached. The company also says it will remove the one-year equity vesting cliff for employees who joined within the past year.
The support package in Canva’s memo includes 12 months of healthcare continuation where Canva provides it, career assistance and permission to keep company MacBooks. A US$10,000 grant fund supports departing employees who want to start something of their own; the registration-of-interest deadline is 14 December. Check the fund’s terms before counting it in your household budget.
2027 could change the job you thought you kept
From January, most hybrid employees are expected to attend an office around two to three days weekly, depending on their area. Canva’s announcement brings travel time, care arrangements and regular expenses into the decision about staying.
The next checkpoints are the company meeting on 10 November and organisation meetings from 11 November. Watch for the actual reporting lines, role descriptions and location requirements. A reassuring speech will not tell you whether the revised job can be done within a reasonable week.
Make your next move before the new role becomes permanent
I would compare the exit offer with the real cost of staying: the revised job, the commute and any relocation. If your speciality is being absorbed, show other employers the complete customer problem you can solve, beyond the title on your Canva profile.
For anyone staying, record the revised scope before the first delivery deadline. Keeping your salary should not require surrendering every boundary around the job. For more help weighing the decision, see layoff career counselling.
