Your role has been cut. There is a document in front of you and a date by which Citi wants an answer.
The number on the first page may feel like the whole decision. It is only one part of what you need to understand. When the pay arrives, how benefits are handled and what the agreement requires can change what the package means for your household.
This guide covers questions for U.S. employees. Citi employees in Canada, the UK and other countries need the terms and legal rules that apply where they work.
What can you actually verify about Citi severance?
The public Citi Benefits Handbook page links to a 2025 U.S. health and insurance handbook. That document describes health and insurance plans effective January 1, 2025. It refers to separation-plan eligibility in a retiree-health provision. It does not supply a universal weeks-of-pay calculation for a 2026 layoff. Read the handbook, pages 1, 3 and 32.
Your first request should be for the current separation plan or policy that covers your legal employer and employee group, together with your personalised offer and any amendments. Ask which document controls if two explanations differ.
If someone gives you a verbal formula, ask them to point to the section that applies to you. That is more useful than collecting several different answers from people who left at different times.
How much Citi severance will you get?
A responsible answer needs your written terms. We cannot verify a standard number of weeks per year of service for every Citi worker from the public material reviewed.
Ask HR to show the calculation line by line. You want to see the salary or other pay basis used, the service date credited, the weeks or amount offered, any limits and any conditions.
Check whether a period of paid notice is shown separately from separation pay. Ask how final wages, unused leave, bonus and equity are treated. Do not assume that everything you expect to receive is included in the headline amount.
For the workforce announcement itself, use our Citi layoffs and severance-charge reporting. This page deals with the package in front of an employee.
The Citi severance package checklist
Use this as a document checklist. The questions do not imply that Citi offers every item to every employee.
| Item | Get this answer in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Which plan, policy and employee group cover me? | You need the rules applicable to your situation. |
| Calculation | What pay basis, service date and formula produced this amount? | You can identify missing service or a calculation you do not understand. |
| Timing | When does each payment arrive, and is it a lump sum or continued payments? | You need dates to plan household bills. |
| Health coverage | When does active coverage end, and what will continuation cost? | The insurance bill can change after employment ends. |
| Bonus and equity | What happens to earned, discretionary or unvested amounts? | Different awards can have different rules. |
| Conditions | What happens if I accept another role, return to Citi or receive other pay? | Ask whether any offset, repayment or eligibility rule applies. |
| Release and deadlines | What am I agreeing to, and when must I decide? | You need time to understand obligations and obtain advice. |
| Errors or disputes | Who handles a calculation correction or plan claim, and by what deadline? | A named contact and process make follow-up possible. |
Will your health insurance continue after a Citi layoff?
Confirm the date active coverage ends and whether any employer contribution continues after that date. Ask for separate details for medical, dental, vision and your dependants.
The U.S. Department of Labor explains that COBRA can allow eligible workers and families to keep health coverage temporarily after certain qualifying events. The worker usually pays the full premium unless the employer contributes. Its guidance describes a 60-day election period measured from the later of coverage loss or the election notice. Read the official COBRA guidance.
Keep the election notice and its payment instructions. Put the actual dates on your calendar. Ask the benefits administrator to explain how your severance arrangement interacts with coverage, including any employer subsidy and the date that subsidy ends.
The Citi handbook also contains a specific provision for some involuntarily terminated employees approaching retiree-health eligibility. If that describes your situation, ask the administrator to assess your eligibility under the current terms before you choose coverage. See the 2025 handbook, page 32.
What happens to your Citi bonus and stock awards?
Request the documents governing each award. Ask what has already been earned or vested, what remains conditional and which employment date matters.
Do not use a company-wide severance expense to estimate your bonus or award value. That accounting figure cannot answer your individual question.
A useful request is: “Please list each payment and award separately, identify the document governing it, and show the date and condition that determine whether I receive it.”
If the answer refers you to another team, ask for the contact and follow up before your acceptance deadline. Keep the reply with the offer so you can review the package as a whole.
How long do you have to sign?
Read the deadline in your offer immediately. Ask for an explanation of any review period, revocation period and date on which the agreement becomes effective.
For covered U.S. workers aged 40 or older, the EEOC explains that an age-discrimination waiver generally requires at least 21 days for review, or 45 days for certain group termination programmes, plus seven days after signing to revoke. Those rules have specific conditions; they are not a universal deadline for every agreement or country. Review the EEOC explanation.
Arrange qualified legal advice promptly if you need it. Ask for an extension in writing if the time is insufficient, while keeping track of the existing deadline.
Can you negotiate a Citi severance package?
You can ask whether the offer can be reviewed. The material examined here does not establish that Citi will negotiate every package or change a plan formula.
Start with any factual error. Incorrect service dates, missing pay details or an unclear benefit end date give you a specific issue to raise. Then identify the term you want reviewed and why it matters.
Keep the request focused. If your main concern is the timing of a payment or continuity of coverage, say so. Ask for a written response and confirm whether the request affects your deadline.
Our general severance review checklist covers additional questions to discuss with a qualified adviser.
What to request before you lose system access
Obtain personal employment and benefits records through approved channels: your offer, separation documents, payslips, award statements, benefit notices and the contact details needed for follow-up.
Do not take client information, internal business files or confidential material to support a personal claim. Ask HR how to obtain a copy of a personal record if access is ending.
Create a one-page calendar with the acceptance deadline, any applicable revocation deadline, payment dates, coverage dates and benefit election deadlines. Add the name of the contact responsible for each unresolved item.
The email to send when the package is unclear
Please send me the current separation plan or policy that applies to my role, my itemised payment calculation, and the dates for employment, pay and benefit changes. Please also confirm how my bonus and equity awards are treated, the conditions attached to the offer, and all acceptance or review deadlines. Where a term depends on another document, please identify that document and how I can obtain it.
Use it as a starting point and add the questions that apply to you. The goal is to make the decision with the complete terms in front of you.

The Host is an ex-banker and former Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 global sales leader with nearly two decades of corporate and commercial experience. His background includes revenue targets, team leadership and the pressure of providing for a family when a job ends. A separation offer has to make sense beyond the number on its first page.
After losing his job twice in five years, he built The Grind Hotline and its three free tools to help employees recognise workplace pressure and prepare their options. His story of being fired on his daughter’s birthday explains the personal cost behind that work. The tools help employees assess their situation and follow public employer signals; their own separation documents determine the terms of an offer.
