CONOCOPHILLIPS · CANADA JOB CUTS

ConocoPhillips Canada Layoffs 2026: Survived One Round? Here Comes Another.

A smaller team can leave the people who stay with a bigger job. The cost plan is public. Employees need clear answers about what work disappears.

Quick answer

ConocoPhillips confirmed Canadian workforce reductions on October 26, with action scheduled for October 27. Employees and contractors are affected; the Canadian total is undisclosed. The earlier 20% to 25% reduction plan, announced in September 2025, covered the global workforce. The Canadian division is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Employees who keep their jobs should watch how much work stays behind.

Survived the last cuts? Canada is back on the list.

ConocoPhillips is cutting its Canadian workforce again. A spokesperson said, “We routinely review our organization,” as the company confirmed the reduction. For the people facing an exit, that review can end a paycheque. Company statement reported on October 26.

The Canadian division is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Its operations include Surmont in northeastern Alberta and the Montney development in northeastern British Columbia. The company has not provided a site-by-site cut total for this round.

The previous Canadian notification plan was reported in October 2025, with layoffs scheduled for the following November. Employees are facing another reduction a year later.

Management’s savings target puts jobs on the line.

The 2025 annual report sets a target of more than US$1 billion in incremental yearly cost reductions and margin improvements, with the full run rate expected by the end of 2026. Workforce changes sit alongside lower operating, transportation and processing costs. The target follows the integration of Marathon Oil. Employees are part of a cost plan management has already put on record.

Contractors go. Their work could land on your desk.

A contractor may hold the knowledge behind a system, a reporting process or a technical handover. If that person leaves while the deliverable stays, somebody else inherits the problem. Permanent employees should examine contractor departures alongside changes to their own team.

Watch for rushed handovers, wider coverage and approval duties moving to fewer people. Those changes can leave an employee responsible for more work without the training or authority to carry it.

A smaller team should not mean two jobs for one paycheque.

If responsibilities expand, get the change recorded before it becomes the normal job. Ask which tasks stop, what training is provided and whether the new scope triggers a level and pay review.

For employees covered by Alberta employment standards, the usual minimum notice or termination pay ranges from one week after more than 90 days of service to eight weeks at ten years or more. Exceptions apply. Contractual or common-law entitlements can exceed those minimums.

Check who actually employs you. An agency employee and an independent contractor have different working relationships. Have your status and termination terms checked before assuming the same payment rules apply.

Choose three results you can explain to another employer: a problem solved, a cost reduced or a project delivered. Contact people who have seen that work and can introduce you to another team. Make the next conversation about what you can deliver.

Yes. The company confirmed reductions involving employees and contractors, scheduled for October 27, 2026.

Is ConocoPhillips cutting 20% to 25% of its Canadian workforce?

The 20% to 25% figure belongs to the global plan announced in September 2025. No Canadian percentage has been disclosed for the October 2026 action.

Which ConocoPhillips Canada departments are affected?

A department-by-department or site-by-site allocation has not been published. Employees need their own notice or company communication to identify how their role is affected.

Why is ConocoPhillips reducing its workforce?

The company is pursuing organizational efficiency and lower costs. Its annual report places workforce restructuring inside a wider program of operating-cost reductions and margin improvements.

How many employees does ConocoPhillips have in Canada?

The rounded 2025 annual report figures imply roughly 800 Canadian employees at year-end: 8% of approximately 9,900 worldwide. This is our historical estimate. Contractors and subsequent staffing changes are outside that base.

What notice or termination pay should Alberta employees check?

For eligible employees covered by Alberta employment standards, usual minimums range from one to eight weeks based on service. Notice, pay or a combination can apply. Exceptions and additional entitlements depend on the circumstances. Check the government guidance and your individual terms.
