Fewer support jobs. More people carrying the sales number.
CEO Bill McDermott called the slight headcount decline a “gorgeous situation”. CFO Gina Mastantuono said “quota-bearing heads are up double digits”, meaning sellers with sales targets. Sales operations staffing has fallen sharply.
A larger sales force can still need fewer people preparing reports, moving account information or coordinating routine steps. If that is your work, look at how much reaches sellers automatically and what still requires someone to resolve a problem.
The email-moving job is already inside the automation pitch.
McDermott said work performed by roughly 100 sales-operations employees three years ago now runs autonomously. That puts routine information handling squarely inside management’s automation plan.
Being close to revenue offers little protection when sellers can complete the process without your team. Automated account updates and coaching prompts can remove coordination work. Identify where your judgment still changes a deal or a customer outcome.
AI engineering grows. Support hiring gets squeezed.
Mastantuono described adding AI engineers while needing fewer additional support and overhead hires inside research and development. Employees doing that support work could face fewer openings even as the department expands.
Watch the skills listed in new R&D vacancies and the coordination steps being automated. A move into the expanding work may require training, a different role or responsibility for decisions the software leaves unresolved.
Watch the task management is trying to take out.
| Work to examine | Warning inside the team | A practical move |
|---|---|---|
| Sales information and reporting | Sellers receive updates directly from automated tools | Build evidence of decisions, customer outcomes or exceptions that require your judgment. |
| Coordination inside R&D | Specialist hiring grows while support hiring is restrained | Map which decisions you own and which handoffs the new workflow removes. |
| Process ownership | An agent runs the workflow while people handle failures | Clarify who can stop, correct and approve the process, and what skills those duties require. |
2027 can bring more growth with fewer support seats.
Management expects AI adoption to support business growth in 2027 and beyond. The current restructuring program is expected to be substantially complete in 2026. A risk for next year: the smaller support structure becomes the basis for a larger business.
Check the staffing attached to new sales capacity and AI projects. When automated processes fail, someone still has to resolve the case. Make that responsibility visible in the job description, training and workload before it becomes a permanent extra duty.
Move towards the decisions that still need you.
I have led sales teams. More people carrying a quota can arrive alongside fewer people supporting them. I would build evidence of the deals, data problems and customer exceptions I can resolve, then pursue roles where those skills are needed.
