Another quarter smaller. External staff are leaving too.
UBS’s combined workforce measure fell by 9,599, about 8%, between December and September. It combines internal FTEs with external headcount. The external count alone fell by about 4,015 over those nine months, according to our calculation.
| Workforce measure | June 30, 2026 | September 30, 2026 | Quarterly net change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal personnel, full-time equivalents | 99,085 | 97,593 | 1,492 fewer |
| External personnel, people counted | Approximately 13,303 | Approximately 12,397 | Approximately 906 fewer |
UBS directly reports the external quarterly reduction of about 906. We calculated the June external base by adding that reduction to September’s count. Outside specialists can leave while permanent employees still need their expertise to finish the work.
Another US$500 million before the integration deadline.
The year-end savings expectation is about US$200 million above UBS’s previous ambition. The remaining US$500 million describes a further reduction in the annual cost base as changes take effect. Staffing, systems and other spending can contribute.
UBS explicitly links lower personnel expenses mainly to a smaller workforce. It reported US$2.69 billion in quarterly net profit and US$1.8 billion in share repurchases. For employees, strong earnings have arrived alongside continued reductions.
When the old system closes, what keeps your role?
Around 90% of legacy Credit Suisse applications in scope were fully decommissioned by September 30, up from about 70% in June. As those systems close, some support and migration assignments can end with them.
A successful migration can finish the assignment that made a specialist essential. Watch application shutdowns, handover dates and transfers of decision-making authority. Employees doing duplicated operations, reporting or oversight work should examine which duties survive in the combined structure.
You use the AI. Management decides how many people stay.
Employees are running more than 12,700 personal AI agents. UBS also says more than 18,000 developers use AI tools, producing measurable productivity gains. It has not attributed the quarterly staffing decline to those agents.
If management raises delivery targets, compare the extra output with the time the tools actually save. Include corrections, sign-offs and unresolved exceptions. A task that finishes faster can still create work elsewhere in the process.
Watch the work that can outlive the team.
| Change to watch | Potential job pressure | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| A legacy application reaches its shutdown date | A support or migration assignment may end | Translate the completed work into evidence for roles on the combined platforms. |
| Sign-off authority moves to a combined team | Your duties may remain while control over decisions shifts away | Keep decision rights and accountability together when responsibilities change. |
| AI savings appear in delivery targets | More cases or projects may be assigned to fewer people | Compare actual task time, including review, with the capacity assumed in the plan. |
The merger ends. Cost discipline carries on.
CFO Todd Tuckner described the next phase as maintaining “a structurally efficient cost base and disciplined resource allocation”. Our reading for employees: the integration deadline brings no promise of easier staffing budgets in 2027.
