What is happening with banking layoffs?

Banking job cuts can involve announced redundancies, merger integration, smaller management structures and positions that are not replaced when employees leave. At the same time, banks may hire in other businesses or invest in AI and technology. The effect depends on the employer, function, location and date.

This guide brings selected bank reporting together and explains how to read it. Figures below are dated examples. A change in total headcount, a proposed reduction and a completed layoff establish different facts.

US banks and their global businesses

US bank layoffs, bank by bank.

Find the bank behind the headline. These examples distinguish group workforce figures from local employment actions, with links to the underlying documents and our reporting.

US BANK / 01

Wells Fargo layoffs

Wells Fargo & Company

Net workforce change

Dated example: Q3 2026 quarterly supplement.

Wells Fargo reported 194,369 employees at September 30, 2026, compared with 197,466 at June 30. The difference is a net decline of 3,097, which includes the effect of hiring and departures.

Our Q3 analysis connects the smaller workforce with management’s efficiency discussion and the questions employees face about team capacity. Ask which vacancies remain funded and which work has actually ended.

What to check: If the team is smaller, which responsibilities and service expectations have changed?

US BANK / 02

Bank of America layoffs

Bank of America Corporation

Staffing and productivity

Dated example: Q3 2026 supplemental information.

Bank of America reported 209,911 employees at September 30, 2026, down from 211,304 at June 30. Those global totals show a workforce change, rather than the number of people laid off in one US action.

Our reporting examines management layers, technology output and staffing discipline. An employee needs the funded plan for their business, especially when a vacant position disappears while its responsibilities remain.

What to check: Is the vacant position approved for replacement, and who owns its work in the meantime?

US BANK / 03

Citi / Citibank layoffs

Citigroup Inc.

Headcount and restructuring

Dated example: Q2 2026 earnings presentation.

Citi’s Q2 2026 presentation reported approximately 219,000 direct staff alongside its severance expenses and productivity savings. Its staff figures are rounded and cover the group.

The linked Citi investigation follows the severance and restructuring discussion beyond a single quarter. Read an investment package carefully: spending can include both severance and growth initiatives. The full budget cannot be converted into a job-cut total.

What to check: Which part of the restructuring concerns this business, and what decisions have been communicated?

US BANK / 04

JPMorgan Chase layoffs

JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Operations and consolidation

Selected reporting: June 2026 Plano operations case.

Our Plano investigation examines a local call center closure and operations consolidation. A bank can close a team in one location while recruiting for different positions elsewhere.

Separately, JPMorgan’s 2025 Investor Day materials described technology-driven improvements in KYC processing. That is evidence about a workflow. It does not establish that AI caused the Plano action. Check the affected function, employer and location before joining the two stories.

What to check: Is this work ending, moving to another location or being assigned to another team?

US BANK / 05

Goldman Sachs layoffs

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

AI and workflow redesign

Dated example: 2025 annual report, published in 2026.

Goldman’s annual report describes One Goldman Sachs 3.0, an operating model using AI to modernize and automate work. Its initial focus includes client onboarding, KYC, regulatory reporting and lending.

That operating model is relevant to employees whose jobs involve preparing, checking and moving information. The report’s automation strategy does not provide a mass-layoff count. Our analysis considers what happens to responsibilities, hiring and review work as those processes change.

What to check: Which decisions and controls stay with people after this workflow changes?

US BANK / 06

Morgan Stanley layoffs

Morgan Stanley

Growth and role changes

Dated example: Q2 2026 financial supplement.

Morgan Stanley’s Q2 supplement reported 82,944 worldwide employees, compared with 80,393 a year earlier. The larger total is important context when reading reports about selected job cuts.

Our cross-bank analysis explains how reductions in some teams can coexist with recruitment in other businesses or locations. Group headcount alone cannot tell you whether a particular department is expanding, being reorganized or losing positions.

What to check: Which businesses and locations are growing, and where does our team fit?

US BANK / 07

Capital One / Discover layoffs

Capital One Financial Corporation

Merger integration

Selected reporting: June 2026 review of spring announcements.

Our Capital One and Discover investigation follows role eliminations announced during integration. It keeps the original notice dates and the affected groups attached to the reporting.

A merger can combine systems, functions and reporting lines over time. A schedule in an earlier announcement does not establish that every departure happened, or that all integration decisions are complete. Employees should locate their own function in the combined operating plan.

What to check: What work will the combined team retain after the systems and reporting lines merge?

UK roles and UK-headquartered groups

UK banking layoffs and redundancies.

UK banking coverage needs a geographic check. HSBC’s UK wealth proposals concern UK roles. Barclays and Standard Chartered also report group plans whose figures should keep their global scope.

For a global announcement, identify the UK employer, location and affected function before calling the total a UK job-cut number.

UK BANKING / 01

HSBC layoffs

HSBC Holdings plc / HSBC UK

UK wealth proposals

Dated reporting: October 7, 2026.

ITV News, citing the Financial Times, reported proposed reductions in HSBC’s UK wealth business, including financial advisers, managers and specialists. The story concerns defined UK role groups.

Read the proposal with its original date. Consultation, a final decision and an employee’s departure are separate stages. For a UK wealth employee, the useful questions concern the selection pool, client allocation and the responsibilities of retained positions.

What to check: Which positions are in the proposed structure, and where would my clients and responsibilities go?

UK BANKING / 02

Barclays layoffs

Barclays PLC

Group restructuring plan

Dated example: October 22, 2026 results materials.

Barclays’ October results materials described actions involving around 5,000 full-time roles during 2026. This is a group figure. It should not be relabelled as 5,000 UK redundancies or a separate 2027 announcement.

The reporting examines support functions, technology and the staffing timetable. Employees should identify the business and location covered by a proposal, then ask whether retraining or redeployment leads to an approved role.

What to check: Which part of the group plan applies here, and what funded alternatives exist for affected employees?

UK BANKING / 03

Lloyds Banking Group layoffs

Lloyds Banking Group plc

Savings and work redesign

Dated example: Accelerate 2030 strategy, July 2026.

Lloyds’ Accelerate 2030 strategy targets approximately £2 billion in gross cost savings, with technology, productivity and simplification among the levers. A savings target cannot be translated directly into a redundancy total.

Our analysis asks which tasks are being redesigned and how the staffing decision will follow. Savings can involve systems, suppliers, property and process changes as well as employment. Look for a specific proposal concerning your team.

What to check: What changes to the work are approved, and what has actually been decided about positions?

UK BANKING / 04

Standard Chartered layoffs

Standard Chartered PLC

Global corporate functions

Dated example: May 19, 2026 transformation presentation.

Standard Chartered’s investor presentation set a target to reduce corporate-function headcount by more than 15% by 2030. It is a global transformation target, rather than a count of UK departures.

Our follow-up examines the plan alongside half-year results and technology investment. Employees in support functions need the country, employer and function breakdown. A bank’s London headquarters does not make every position in a global plan a UK job.

What to check: Which countries and support functions are covered by the plan for our business?

Connect the headline to your work

What bank employees should watch.

Public reporting gives you a starting point. Changes around your own work help you decide which questions need an answer.

  • Vacancies that never reopen. If an employee leaves and the responsibilities remain, ask whether the vacancy still has funding and how the remaining workload will be covered.
  • Automation without a staffing explanation.Ask which tasks a new tool handles, who checks its output and whether productivity assumptions change team size, hiring or service targets.
  • Combined teams and fewer management layers.Clarify reporting lines, selection criteria, decision ownership and whether the new structure changes your responsibilities.
  • Work moving between locations or suppliers.Identify which activity is moving, what remains locally and whether your position has a defined purpose in the future process.
  • More output expected from the same budget.Ask what will stop, what support is approved and how performance will be assessed once the new expectations take effect.

These are questions to investigate, not predictions about who will lose a job. A single signal does not establish an employment outcome.

Understand the number before sharing it

How to check a bank layoff report.

First establish what the source actually describes. Then match the date, business and location to the claim.

Announced job cuts

A specific employment action. Look for the employer, affected roles, notice date and implementation period.

Net headcount change

The difference between two staffing totals. Hiring, departures and business changes can all affect it.

Proposals and targets

A consultation, possible review or multi-year objective. Check the decisions and conditions still outstanding.

AI and productivity

A change to work or capacity. Establish whether the source also announces a staffing consequence.

Start with the company evidence.

Use the earnings filing, bank announcement or attributed report linked in each bank section. Read our guide to headcount, restructuring and severance in earnings reports for the method.

Give rumours a verification step.

Forum posts can raise questions; an anonymous claim does not establish an event or a count. Our layoff-rumour verification guide explains where to look next.

Direct answers for employees

Banking layoffs, explained.

Questions about bank job cuts, UK redundancies, AI and what comes next.

Which banks are covered in this banking layoffs guide?

The guide covers Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Capital One / Discover, plus HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds and Standard Chartered. Its Canadian bank layoffs guide covers TD, CIBC, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank and National Bank. Each example keeps its date and geographic scope.

Why can profitable banks still cut jobs?

A bank can grow revenue while changing its cost base, combining businesses or hiring for different skills. Profit is a group result. An employment decision concerns a particular role, function or location. Read our explanation of why banking layoffs happen.

Are UK banking layoffs the same as a global bank reduction?

The geographic scope can differ. A UK redundancy proposal concerns specified UK positions. A London-headquartered group may announce a global reduction affecting other countries. Check the legal employer, business, location and period before assigning a group total to the UK.

Does falling headcount equal the number of employees laid off?

Headcount is the number employed at a reporting date. Its movement can include hiring, resignations, retirement, layoffs, transfers and business changes. Compare like-for-like figures and use an actual notice or announcement to identify a specific layoff action.

Is AI causing banking job cuts?

Some banks explicitly link staffing plans to technology and automation. Other disclosures describe productivity gains without announcing job losses. Use the evidence for that bank and function. An AI product launch alone does not establish either a layoff count or the cause of a separate employment action.

Does a 2026 announcement prove more layoffs are coming in 2027?

A published plan may extend into a later year, but it does not establish an additional round of cuts. Check the original timetable, what has been completed and whether management has announced a new action. This guide does not predict an individual employee’s outcome.

Where should bank employees start with severance or redundancy questions?

Start with the written proposal or offer, the response deadline, your legal employer and the country where you work. Our Citi and Wells Fargo severance guides explain questions to investigate. UK readers can use GOV.UK’s redundancy guidance. Seek advice about your own terms before agreeing.
