GOOGLE VOLUNTARY EXITS · THE PACKAGE AND THE RISK OF STAYING

Google Layoffs 2026: Buyouts Spread. Staying Is a Gamble.

Paid exits reached five countries. Google has followed buyouts with cuts before, and its 2027 productivity plans put staying under scrutiny.

Quick answer

Google confirmed to Reuters that it extended voluntary exit offers to selected employees in five countries in June 2026. The expansion became public on November 4; participation is undisclosed. Swiss departures began in August. Google has previously followed buyouts with layoffs. Employees weighing an offer should compare the written package with the changing job and productivity expectations ahead.

A buyout puts a hard choice in front of employees: take a defined payment and leave, or keep the salary while management changes the business around you. The Google name can make walking away feel unthinkable. Your household still needs a plan that survives the next executive decision.

Zurich shows where the offer landed

Reuters says Google Cloud and DeepMind were excluded from past offers, with the latest expansion apparently following that pattern. Swiss sources specifically confirmed DeepMind’s exclusion from a program covering several divisions. Google employs about 5,000 people there.

Earlier offers covered parts of the US and UK. Eligibility depends on your team and local offer; check the conditions and approval process before counting on a payment.

The volunteers left. Forced cuts followed.

Google’s Platforms and Devices unit, covering Android, Pixel and Chrome, offered buyouts in January 2025. Reuters reported hundreds of layoffs in April, citing The Information and a company spokesperson who confirmed job reductions alongside the voluntary program.

That history gives employees a reason to take an offer seriously. Volunteers can help management reshape a team while further cuts remain possible. Turning down the money leaves your future tied to the next staffing decision.

204,757 employees. Your team can still shrink.

Alphabet’s September workforce total reached 204,757, an increase of 14,590 employees, or 7.7%, from a year earlier. Quarterly revenue rose 25% to US$127.6 billion.

R&D expenses rose 36%, with AI talent compensation and depreciation among the drivers. Google is spending more on the skills it wants while offering selected employees an exit. A bigger company can give a particular team a smaller future.

Their 2027 productivity promise lands on your desk

On the October 28 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said Chrome, Ads and Search teams using new AI models were shipping 35% more code with 30% fewer errors. CFO Anat Ashkenazi expects capital spending to increase significantly in 2027, following a 2026 forecast of US$195 billion to US$205 billion.

Google is measuring more code and fewer errors. Employees should watch whether next year’s targets assume every team can repeat those results.

Canadian employees: check what you are signing away

Google lists Toronto, Kitchener and Montréal offices. Canadian eligibility needs checking locally. For qualifying Ontario terminations, statutory severance requires at least five years’ service and an employer meeting the payroll or closure test; the cap is 26 weeks. Notice or termination pay is separate, and greater rights may apply. Montréal employees should check Quebec’s rules.

Before accepting a voluntary exit, check EI eligibility with Service Canada. A qualifying workforce reduction can allow benefits, subject to conditions. Have the offer reviewed against your own entitlements before signing away claims.

Price the package. Loyalty has no cash value.

If an offer reached me, I would compare the cash I could actually spend with the monthly cost of leaving. Benefits, equity dates, restrictions and the time needed to find suitable work belong in that calculation. Get the terms reviewed before signing.

An exit that funds a realistic transition can give you control over the next step. Hoping for a richer offer later means betting on terms Google has never promised. Staying simply because leaving feels disloyal hands the company too much influence over your decision.

Staying means living with the next organization chart

A continuing salary matters. So does the job attached to it. Before accepting expanded responsibilities, put the revised work beside the hours, pay and authority you would have.

Questions workers are asking

Which countries are included in Google’s 2026 buyouts?

Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. Eligibility applies to selected employees.

How much is Google paying employees who take a buyout?

The reported Swiss formula is one month’s salary per service year, up to 12 months. Employees elsewhere need their country-specific offer.

Are Google’s voluntary buyouts still open?

The Swiss process began in June, with application decisions in July. The November report establishes no new application window; check the current written offer.

Can Google still lay off employees after offering buyouts?

Yes. Its Platforms and Devices unit had voluntary exits followed by layoffs in 2025. A new offer should be assessed with that history in mind.

Should I take a Google voluntary exit package?

Compare the usable payment, benefits and equity with your household costs, job options and the role you would keep. A viable exit can be valuable; get the conditions reviewed before accepting.

Has Google announced a specific 2027 layoff total?

No. Management’s 2027 remarks concern AI productivity and higher capital spending. They give employees a reason to examine future targets and staffing decisions.
