Microsoft Buyout 2026: Say No and Still Face a Layoff?

Microsoft has already included the exit offer in its cost forecast. Before you say no, compare the package with the job you would be keeping.

Quick answer

Microsoft says layoffs remain possible after its buyout, which covers about 60,000 eligible employees, GeekWire reports. Before accepting, check the usable payment, benefits and equity dates, job options, and the responsibilities you would keep. Declining preserves salary while employment continues. The package needs to fund a workable transition for your household.

Microsoft Employee: Should I Take the Buyout?

Harj Singh examines the payout, the risk of staying and Microsoft’s fiscal 2027 staffing outlook. The Employee Speaks opening scene is dramatized.

Microsoft describes the offer as equivalent to standard severance. Taking it means accepting a defined exit now and giving up future salary. Staying keeps income coming for as long as you remain employed. Ask how much control the payment gives you over your next move.

Microsoft has budgeted for your exit

On the October 28 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood said the next quarter’s cost forecast “includes an estimate for the recently announced employee voluntary exit offer.” Your household needs equally clear numbers. Microsoft also reported revenue of $92.3 billion, up 19%.

Hood also forecast more than $50 billion in capital spending for that quarter. The next day, Microsoft priced $25 billion in bonds for general corporate purposes, which may include capital spending, acquisitions, buybacks and debt repayment.

A glowing review cannot save a deleted role

Microsoft says performance plays no part in eligibility for this offer, GeekWire reports. A strong review records what you delivered. Management can still change the product, merge the team or remove a position.

That makes “they need me too much” a dangerous reason to dismiss the email. Your manager’s praise can be sincere while a decision above them changes your future.

Price the salary you would give up

Put two three-month budgets side by side. For leaving, calculate the payout after taxes and deductions, benefits you must replace, and any confirmed new income. For staying, estimate salary, employer-paid benefits and stock that could vest. Treat continued employment and vesting as assumptions. Then divide available cash and usable savings by essential monthly costs to see how long an exit could last.

Canadian employees should contact Service Canada before counting EI in the exit budget. Eligibility after a voluntary workforce-reduction departure depends on the program and individual conditions.

Fear and loyalty are expensive substitutes for that calculation.

Staying can come with a bigger job

You could keep the salary and inherit a team that works very differently. If colleagues accept, watch who becomes responsible for their projects, customer problems and approvals. Extra duties can consume the time you need to find another role.

Ask: “What work is this team expected to deliver next year, and where does my role fit?” Follow that with the deadlines, decision-making authority and number of people doing the work. If the plan relies on you covering several departing colleagues, put that expectation on the table before it becomes your normal week.

The 2027 warning is already on record

In April, Hood said “we expect headcount will decrease year-over-year” while discussing fiscal 2027, which runs from July 2026 through June 2027. The October 28 call supplied no updated headcount forecast.

Spring retirement offers were followed by approximately 4,800 July role eliminations. We covered those cuts in our July Microsoft report.

Make the Microsoft name earn its keep

I would use the Microsoft name to open a conversation, then show the results behind it: a launch delivered, a customer problem solved, a process improved. Give a prospective employer a clear picture of the work you can handle.

Questions workers are asking

Can Microsoft lay me off if I decline the buyout?

Yes. Microsoft says involuntary reductions remain available depending on business conditions. Declining the offer gives you no guarantee against a later staffing decision.

Should I take Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer?

It can be a workable exit if the payment covers a realistic transition or you have another job secured. If leaving creates an immediate financial gap, retaining your income while looking elsewhere may be the stronger choice.

Will a later Microsoft severance package pay more?

A future payment would depend on the program and entitlements applicable at the time. There is no published commitment to an improved offer.

Has Microsoft announced how many employees it will lay off in 2027?

The fiscal 2027 headcount forecast gives no layoff quota. It describes an expected workforce decline; voluntary departures, hiring and other changes affect the final total.

What happens to my Microsoft stock if I take the buyout?

Continued vesting is included, subject to the offer’s conditions and end date. Check which awards qualify and the vesting schedule in your written terms.

Does the Microsoft buyout include healthcare?

The offer includes temporary healthcare coverage. It omits the extended coverage available under the spring retirement program. Check the duration and local conditions.
