ING is changing who owns the client
Corporate coverage is moving from an industry-based model towards country-based teams. Employees need to follow where client responsibility moves, who makes decisions and how the new role compares with the one they hold today. Financial-institution clients will retain globally organized coverage.
Specialist teams are being pulled together
The new Global Finance and Advisory organization brings together industry expertise, advisory, financing and distribution. Transaction banking and markets sit in separate global product teams.
| Change ING describes | Employees who should pay attention | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Country-based corporate coverage | Client-coverage teams and their managers | Client ownership, reporting lines and the targets attached to the new job. |
| Global product teams | Transaction banking, markets and specialist product staff | Whether responsibilities are combined across teams or locations. |
| New Global Finance and Advisory organization | Advisory, financing and distribution specialists | Where your expertise sits and which decisions your role will own. |
More business. Fewer people paid to handle it
CEO Steven van Rijswijk says ING has absorbed growth “without requiring additional resources”. He also reported group headcount down 1.5% year over year.
That leaves employees with a practical test: can the new team handle its client load, controls and complex cases within the working day? Track the cases that need experienced judgment and the service standards that become harder to meet.
The efficiency drive already reaches into 2027
Van Rijswijk points to progress against productivity targets set for 2027 and says “we see more opportunities ahead”. Management also expects 2027 operating expenses around €300 million below its earlier target.
ING reported €1.85 billion in Q3 net profit and a €1.9 billion shareholder distribution. The bank is funding shareholder returns while deciding which positions its new structure retains.
The new reporting lines take effect in March. ING plans a further Corporate and Institutional Banking update at its June 2027 Capital Markets Day, including financial and commercial targets. That is the next disclosed checkpoint for employees following the longer-term plan.
Let another employer compete for your banking experience
As an ex-banker, I would build my next application around the industries I understand and the client problems I can solve. Describe the financing decisions, complex transactions or relationship outcomes you handled. Use that experience to compare roles across corporate banking, transaction services and advisory.
ING says it will help affected colleagues find roles inside or outside the bank. Compare the actual client responsibilities, manager, workload and pay of any proposed move.
Follow the banking record beyond one announcement
The Grind Hotline regularly examines bank filings and earnings calls for staffing changes. Our banking coverage connects the record, including Barclays’ developer warning and Bank of America’s management reductions.
Keep the next bank decision within reach
Follow bank announcements through the Weekly Layoff Intelligence Report. Use the Job Threat Check to organize signals around your own role, and the Layoff Tracker + Corporate Stress Index to compare public pressure at covered employers. All three products are free.
