The group grew. The existing workforce shrank
Evelyn Partners brought around 2,200 full-time equivalents into NatWest. After the underlying transformation reduction, the group’s reported year-to-date increase was around 800.
The savings drive is already reaching staff
CEO Paul Thwaite describes structural simplification and technology investment as part of making NatWest simpler and more productive. The bank is growing customer business while reducing the staffing needed in parts of the organization.
The financial review says lower staff costs helped offset some quarterly spending increases. Over the first nine months, NatWest recorded approximately £679 million in share buyback consideration, excluding fees. That exceeded its £420 million in gross savings for the same period.
An AI agent has already supported 52,000 fraud conversations
NatWest says its fraud-triage agent in Cora supported 52,000 credit-card customer conversations. Management describes the tool as helping resolve queries faster and freeing colleagues for more complex needs.
Fraud staff should watch what information reaches them after automated triage. Missing context or an incorrect first assessment can leave an employee rebuilding the case before an investigation begins. Time spent checking that handoff needs to be included when service targets are set.
Watch the job change before the next staffing decision
| Area to watch | Change that needs attention | Your practical response |

| Processing and customer support | Routine steps move into a digital workflow | Show the complex cases, errors and customer outcomes you can handle. |
| Management and coordination | Responsibilities are combined across a larger team | Compare the new scope, decision-making authority and performance targets with your current job. |
| Private banking and wealth integration | The combined businesses adopt shared ways of working | Follow changes to systems, reporting lines and the skills needed for the resulting roles. |
The 2027 staffing plan still sits under a cost target
NatWest’s year-to-date cost-to-income ratio was 45.7%, excluding litigation and conduct costs. Its 2028 target is below 45%. In plain language, management wants operating costs to take a smaller share of income.
Higher income can improve that ratio, alongside savings. Watch the 2027 plan for combined roles, changed responsibilities and the resources promised for customer service and controls.
